No fewer than three persons were feared killed on Tuesday as officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) opened gunfire in Ayetoro, a community in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The Customs officials reportedly stormed the Kikelomo area of the community in search of allegedly smuggled items.
The Customs officials, however, hurriedly left the community after killing three residents.
Over the past three years, there have been several incidents of extrajudicial killings of border community indigenes in Ogun State by officials of the Nigeria Customs Service.
On September 26, 2020, an unarmed panel beater, Idowu Moses, was shot and killed while working in his shop by Customs operatives in Oja Odan, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
In July, Customs officers at Seme shot and killed two young boys Hunsu Taiwo aged 12 and Ganjo Henry aged 10. The boys were playing in their compound when they were hit by Customs’ bullet.
On many occasions, lawmakers, monarchs and community leaders have called on the Federal Government put an end to the unnecessary killings.
The government has, however, failed to make any comment or take action on the matter.
