The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it now generates N5.5 billion daily.
Customs Comptroller-General, Hameed Ali, disclosed this on Thursday when he visited the headquarters of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) in Apapa, Lagos.
Ali, who was represented by the Coordinator in-charge of Customs Zone A, Lagos, Assistant Comptroller General Kaycee Ekekezie, said the feat was made possible as a result of the automation of Customs operations at the ports.
According to the Customs boss, the increase in revenue generation has helped in the prompt payment of salaries of workers of the NCS and made the organisation a critical contributor to the nation’s treasury.
He said, “The automation of the Customs system at ports and borders has made it easy for the service to block revenue leakages and meet targets.
“The system has made transaction in ports user friendly while eliminating human contact and its attendant frictions in the cargo transaction business,” Ali said.
While charging NAGAFF and its members on trade compliance, he said sincere declaration and truthful documentation would help both Customs and the freight forwarders to achieve trade facilitation.
The Founder of NAGAFF, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, asked port users to help Customs by complying to trade rules. He said such trade compliance would foster good relationship with the Customs personnel.
Aniebona said as an association, NAGAFF expose and sanction its members that fail to play by the rules.
