National President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Prince Olayiwola Shittu, has offered to pay the school fees of the first child of late maritime journalist and a former Vice President of the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN), Mr. Blessing Onumajuru, up to university level.
In a letter sent in his capacity as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Skelas Group to the President of MARAN, Shittu said that his company will be responsible for paying the tuition fees of the deceased’s first child, a 7-year-old girl, up to University level.
MARAN President, Mr. Bolaji Akinola, in his response to the gesture, described Shittu as a kind-hearted leader whose virtues are worthy of emulation by others.
Akinola said that Shittu was one of those who provided financial succour to the late Onumajuru during his illness.
“May God Almighty reward all your good deeds abundantly. You have demonstrated again and again that you are not a fair weather friend to journalists but a friend in deed,”Akinola stated in his letter to the leading freight forwarder.
The late Onumajuru died on Saturday, September 22, 2012, in a Lagos hospital after a brief illness.
Until his death, the deceased was a Senior Correspondent of the Nigerian Pilot newspaper.
Late Onumajuru was one of the most senior members of MARAN, an association he served variously as its Treasurer, Publicity Secretary and Vice President.
Born October 2, 1962, in Mgbala village in Agwa community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, the late Onumajuru obtained BA (Hons) in Igbo Linguistics and an MSc in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos.
The late Onumajuru worked in reputable media organisations at various times, including the defunct Daily Times of Nigeria, the defunct Post Express newspapers,Champion newspapers, Total Transport and lately, the Nigerian Pilot newspaper.
The late Onumajuru had a strong flair for politics, an enduring instinct that he demonstrated in 2007 when he contested for an Imo State House of Assembly seat under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
The deceased is survived by a wife and four children
