National publicity secretary of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Obicee Okonkwo has announced his plans to step down from the position.
Okonkwo who disclosed this to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY in his office last week said he opted to leave to seek new opportunities.
He said, “I don’t like remaining in one place for long, especially when you have found out that you have gotten to a level that everybody is saying you are the best. Nobody is the best until the second person comes and that is when you will begin to assess who is the best,”
He said that although he would be stepping down, he would be available to serve again in a different capacity whenever the opportunity arises.
Meanwhile, Okonkwo has reacted to the mission statement of the former Chairman of the association’s Tin Can Island port chapter, Kayode Farinto to “rebrand the association”.
Farinto who had indicated his interest to contest for the position of the publicity secretary said if elected he would “rebrand ANLCA and ensure that all chapter executives are carried along to ensure that the image of ANLCA is boosted”.
But Okonkwo described as an aberration such statement as according to him “it implies that the office of the publicity secretary under his watch has not lived up to expectation”.
“For me, the word rebrand is relative. He might be coming to rebrand from good to worse. For somebody to say he has a mission to rebrand ANLCA, I see that as a slight. It means this office has not being functional and so the person is coming in to make it functional. The brand ANLCA has gotten as a name has gone beyond this country, and so what else does he need to rebrand?
“If I want to be the president in the next dispensation, I should be bold to tell the president of my intentions because I need to understudy him to move on from where he has stopped. But since nobody has told me he is contesting for this position, I am assuming that when I step down, there will be a vacuum,” he said.
