APM Terminals’ Onne Port facility. West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) has granted scholarships to 20 students in the Onne and Ogu communities in Rivers State as part of the company’s annual scholarship program.
Managing Director of WACT, Martin Jacob said, “Every year, 20 students in Nigerian tertiary locations from Rivers State gain valuable education from the scholarship program, including an opportunity for job placement for the top performers.”
Speaking after scholarship awards were presented to this year’s recipients, Jacob said the scholarship and job training program were created in the company’s corporate social responsibility plan to develop future talent within the company’s port community.
“Our CSR initiatives are designed to help people in the communities where our business is located which is why we are also partnering with the government to rehabilitate the East West road,” he said.
Jacob said the East West road, when completed, will not only improve the economic activities in the Port-Harcourt – Onne axis, but in the entire Rivers State.
The training program provides important growth opportunities to acquire world-class training and development with WACT in the port industry.
Scholars who perform their internship with WACT also have the opportunity to join the company after graduation.
West Africa Container Terminal Onne started commercial operations in 2007 and has become the most efficient Nigerian gateway to markets outside the greater Lagos area. It has an annual throughput capacity of 314,000 TEUs, with 250 reefer plugs and a depth of 12 meters alongside.
