Bayero asks contractors to expedite port access roads repairs

The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero has charged the contractors handling the rehabilitation work at the Tin Can Island access road to expedite action to ease traffic in and out of the port.

Bayero stated this on Wednesday last week when he undertook an inspection of the project at the Tin Can Island Port, Apapa.

The contract for the rehabilitation of the 3.5km access road spanning from the second gate of Tin Can Island Port to the PTML was signed recently to ameliorate the suffering being encountered by Nigerians that use the facility on a regular basis.

The NPA Managing Director said that the Authority had also signed a memorandum of understanding with a road construction firm for urgent repair of the Liverpool roundabout and other deplorable portions of the road leading to the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa.

He said NPA was collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Works through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to make the entire road network within the Tin Can Island/Apapa axis motorable.

He reiterated that NPA, as a responsible and responsive organisation, “would not fold its arms while the citizens of Nigeria paved through the hurricane in an effort to eke out a living through the ports in Apapa”.

Tin Can Island Port Manager Babatunde Longe said the move by NPA to repair failed portions of the access road stretching from Apapa to Mile 2 would ameliorate the hardship faced by port workers.

Ado Bayero also inspected two 60 tons Bollard Pull Marine Tug Boats recently acquired by NPA.

The acquisition of the state of the art tug boats, he said, was a milestone in NPA’s efforts aimed at boosting the effective and efficient berthing and unberthing of bigger vessels at the ports.

Managing Director of Lagos Channel Management (LCM), Danny Fuchs, who received the NPA helmsman, said marine services being provided by the organisation has improved tremendously over the past few years.

Bayero was accompanied on the tour by the Executive Director, Marine and Operation, Engr. David Omonibeke; Executive Director, Engineering and Technical Services, Mallam Sanni Saleh; General Manager, Western Ports, Chief Michael Ajayi and other NPA top management staff.
