The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has pledged to assist the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) in the management of disasters.
A statement issued by NEMA’s Press Officer Manzo Ezekiel on Monday in Abuja said the gesture was aimed at minimising the frequent boat mishaps in the state.
The statement said Mr Eze Udemezue, NEMA’s Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, made the pledge when he led a team of officials of the agency on a visit to the NSEMA office in Minna. Udemezue called for better synergy and collaboration among organisations involved in disaster management for efficient response to disasters in the state.
He affirmed the commitment of NEMA to gather the necessary resources and structures to build a strong and robust framework for disaster management in the country.
He urged the state to take advantage of the recently established NEMA’s operational office in Minna to facilitate greater emergency service delivery to the people at the grassroots.
Udemezue said the agency had also deployed relief assistance to be distributed directly to the survivors and bereaved family members affected by the recent boat mishaps in the state.
Responding, Malam Isa Usman, who received the team, expressed appreciation for the gesture, and gave the assurance that NSEMA would go into partnership with NEMA in disaster management.
The NEMA team was made up of the coordinator of the Minna Operations Office, Mr Lugard Slaku and the Coordinator of NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Ishaya Chonoko.
Others are representatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
