Container throughput at Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, Cambodia’s 2nd largest container hub, expanded 10.6 percent in the first four months of 2015, according to the port’s report.
The state-owned freshwater port handled 42,875 twenty-foot- equivalent units, or TEUs (standard-sized containers), during the January-April period this year, up 10.6 percent from 38,764 TEUs over the same period last year, the report said.
It added that containerized cargo tonnage increased 29 percent to 378,032 tons from 293,034 tons.
Port’s director general Hei Bavy said the port witnessed a rise in the exports of garment products, shoes, and milled rice. In the meantime, it saw the increase in the imports of apparel raw materials and construction items.
“The surge in container volume clearly reflects the country’s better economic situation,” he said.
The port is one of the state-owned enterprises that the government has planned to list on the Cambodian Securities Exchange in the future.
In 2013, the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port launched a China-funded new container terminal with the annual capacity of 120,000 TEUs, bringing the total capacity of the port to 300,000 TEUs per year.
