A maritime incident occurred on July 29, 2024, when a cargo vessel owned by Quest Shipping Ltd destroyed a multi-billion naira groyne along the Lagos coastline at the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme near Eko Atlantic City.

The vessel, carrying petroleum products, broke its anchor and was swept away by strong currents, causing significant damage to the coastal protection structure.

The groyne, erected by the government to prevent coastal erosion, was destroyed over a distance of 18.52km.

Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu, confirmed the incident, stating that the state has invested heavily in preserving coastline communities and will not tolerate damage to existing infrastructure.

According to him, the destroyed groyne cost N7 billion to construct.

He said the state government will summon the ship owner and conduct further investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
