Maersk Line’s 1,827 TEU containership Cecilie Maersk collided with a fishing vessel on Tuesday while en route to Le Port, Reunion, a small island in the vicinity of Madagascar.
“The fishermen were rescued and no injuries were sustained. The fishing vessel has reported sustaining hull damage. All relevant authorities have been notified and the incident has been reported to the vessel’s P&I Club, insurers and flag state,” Maersk Line said.
The fishing vessel, identified as Le Puffin, reportedly had five crew members on board, who were picked up by the ship after the incident.
Following an initial investigation, the Hong Kong-flagged containership, built in 1994, was cleared by authorities to depart.
“A full investigation will be undertaken into this incident. Maersk Line is fully cooperating with the authorities,” the company added.
