A 40-year-old clearing agent, Adamu Elijah, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N1.5 million from an importer in Apapa.
Elijah is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Gabriel Ekundayo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes in May 2018 at Access Bank Plc, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Olodi-Apapa.
“The defendant obtained the sum of N1.5 million from one Anayochukwu Mbato with the pretence he was going to clear his 40-ft container from Tincan Island Port, Apapa, a representation which he knew to be false,” Ekundayo said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N1.5 million property of one Anayochukwu Mbato.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Magistrate Adegboyega Popoola granted him N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties are required to be gainfully employed and furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till November 6, 2019 for mention.
