The Chairman of Morbod Group, Barr. (Mrs) Margaret Onyema-Orakwusi has called for collaboration and concerted action to achieve shipping’s net-zero ambition.
Speaking on Monday during a panel session on “De-carbonisation and Greenhouse Emissions in Shipping – Policy and Operational Perspectives from West and Central Africa”, Onyema-Orakwusi, who is also Chairman of the Shipowners Forum and former President, Nigerian Trawler Owners Association (NITOA), described clean shipping as the backbone of future sustainability of supply chains.
Other panelists at the session included the Secretary-General, International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Kitack Lim; Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh; and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The summit was earlier declared open by the Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo. The Minister said Nigeria remained committed to the sustainability of the blue economy.
Also speaking during the opening ceremony, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Kitack Lim said carbonisation is the greatest challenge facing the present generation.
He assured that IMO is working with other stakeholders to achieve clean shipping.
