Commissioner asks maritime institute to upgrade to degree-awarding status

The Delta State Commissioner for Education, Mr. Charles Emetulu, has tasked the management of Iziso Obos Institute of Maritime Studies and Technology to upgrade the institution to a degree awarding one.

The commissioner, who paid a familiarisation visit to the institution in Warri, expressed delight over the management and facilities on the campus.

He however charged the institution to make efficient use of the academic staff and facilities, adding that the institution has the wherewithal to offer maritime degree courses.

Emetulu who told his host that the private sector is the mover of the economy, stressed that both government and well to do Nigerians should encourage the private sector to develop the nation’s economy.

The commissioner however assured the institution of government’s continued support in its bid to provide middle manpower for the nation.

He also urged the management to seek partnership with the federal, local government councils, Federal Government agencies and non-governmental organisations in the bid to promote the institution.

The Rector of the institute, Charles Araunah, said the idea behind setting up the school was to meet the demand of middle manpower in the nation’s marine sector, and to engage youths in the Niger-Delta area.

He also solicited government support in upgrading the school.
