Mexican ports saw a dramatic decrease in container volumes in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic handling 6.46 million TEU, down 9.1% from 7.1 million TEU the year before.
Container cargo had grown steadily since 2010 posting double digit growth a slow- down in the mid-2010 and picking up in 2017 when more than 6m teu were moved.
According to figures released by the Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT), the Pacific Coast registered the highest cargo movements with 4.46 million TEU, a decrease of 8.1% compared to 4.85 million TEU in 2019.
Ports in the Gulf of Mexico moved 2 million TEU, a drop of 11.2% compared to 2.25 million TEU the year before. Exports fell by 9.3% to 3.23 million TEU while imports also registered a decrease of 8.8% to 3.22 million TEU compared to 3.53 million TEU in 2019.
