Due to a fire which broke out in the engine room aboard the cruise ship Grand Princess, the vessel lost power for a short period of time in the early hours on Monday,
The vessel, owned by Princess Cruises, lost propulsion and electricity approximately 100 miles northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, which led to a slight change in the vessel’s itinerary, namely skipping the Hilo port call.
Grand Princess was carrying some 2,600 passengers and 1,000 crewmembers at the time of the incident.
The crew aboard the cruise ship managed to extinguish the fire and restart the engine. The vessel was reportedly able to enter the port of Honolulu without any additional assistance.
According to a statement by Princess Cruises, cited by Cruise Critic, any further changes to the itinerary will be disclosed following vessel damage assessment.
There were no reports of injuries and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
Grand Princess started its 15-day Hawaii cruise on November 25 when it departed San Francisco.
