The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commissioned a four-classroom block at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre in Lagos, expanding educational facilities for inmates as part of its social responsibility efforts.
In a statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, the Service said the facility was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, under the Customs Cares Initiative. The project was executed by the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command.
The new block is intended to strengthen structured learning within one of Nigeria’s largest correctional centres, supporting educational and vocational programmes aimed at rehabilitation and reintegration.
Speaking at the event, Adeniyi said the initiative aligns with the Service’s broader commitment to interventions inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in education, health, water provision and literacy. He added that improving access to education in correctional facilities can help reduce reoffending and equip inmates with practical skills.
He also acknowledged the role of Assistant Comptroller-General Joy Edeldouk in initiating the project.
Representing the Comptroller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Corrections, Amos Kupan, said the classrooms would enhance the centre’s rehabilitation mandate and improve the learning environment for inmates.
Officials from both agencies said the project reflects inter-agency collaboration in support of rehabilitation and human capital development. The ceremony concluded with the formal commissioning of the facility and a tour of the new classrooms.
