The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) yesterday said that it generated a total of about N71 million as internally generated revenue from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States in May.
Customs Area Comptroller in charge of the three states, Ishaku Ahmed, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Sokoto.
Ahmed said that the NCS had put in place sensitive security measures to prevent any form of smuggling business in the areas.
He added that the command had taken steps to meet the target revenue of N117 billion set for it in the 2015 fiscal year by the headquarters of the service.
Ahmed said that officers at the border posts had been briefed on measures to be adopted in preventing smuggling activities.
“We have positioned our officers in all the identified routes used by smugglers in our areas of jurisdiction, in other to apprehend them for prosecution,” he said.
Ahmed solicited the support of traditional rulers in the border communities to assist officers posted to their areas with intelligence reports that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of smugglers.
He said that prompt information about the movement of smugglers would enable the officers of the command to come out with stringent security measures that would stem smuggling.
“We are ready to meet with any smuggler at the battle field, in our resolve to discharge our primary assignment diligently,” he said.
Ahmed, who called on officers and men of the command to continue to put in their best, promised to reward the hard working ones among them.
