The Ports and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) Command of Nigeria Customs Service has disclosed that it collected a total of N142.95 billion between January and July 2022.
The command’s spokesman, Yakubu Mohammad, disclosed in a statement made available to newsmen.
Mohammad said the figure is 15 percent above the N124.18 billion collected during the same period in 2021.
He said the increased revenue was as a result of increased trade volumes through the port, trade facilitation strategies and prevention of revenue leakages, emplaced by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Festus Oyedele Okun.
The statement quoted Okun as advising importers and agents to maximise the four-hour clearance time of cargoes and other trade facilitation initiatives put in place the command.
In a separate development, the Customs Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos, said it has seized twelve trucks of parboiled rice smuggled into the country from neighbouring Benin Republic.
Acting Area Controller of the anti-smuggling unit, Hussein Ejibunu, put the duty paid value of the seized rice at N537.5 million.
He said customs operatives under the unit also seized 34,725 litres of petrol, 39 bales of used clothes, and 225 used tyres, among others.
