The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said yesterday that it generated N26.2 billion in the month of August.
The command in a statement released by its Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Customs Uche Ejesieme said the collection is unprecedented in the history of the command.
According to the statement, the figure represents a positive signal going by the indices of the previous month.
“It would be recalled that the Controller had expressed his determination to institute operational reforms and policies that will guarantee maximum revenue collections,”.
Ejesieme attributed the high revenue profile recorded to include the creating of necessary awareness on the stakeholders towards complying with the government’s Fiscal Policies on terms of trade.
He said that the full automation and computerisation of Customs processes and procedures have also helped in enhancing the general performance of the Service coupled with the Controller’s insistence that due diligence must be followed in all transactions.
He stated further that the Command Control Communication and Intelligence System (CCCIS) had further helped in enhancing and perfecting operational processes at the Ports.
The statement quoted the controller of command, Comptroller Yusuf Bashar as saying that all these measures were put in place to curb sharp practices and for the purpose of re-engineering the entire operational and data system for the actualisation of desired results.
The Controller pointed out that even in the face of the current global economic recession, the command will not relent in it’s statutory mandate of revenue generation through various interventionist methods particularly where infractions are detected.
He thanked the Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali, and his management team for their untiring effort towards raising the capacity, competence and commitment of officers, which he said have continued to yield result.
He promised to make the command more user friendly for honest importers who are prepared to display high sense of integrity and responsibility.
