Customs Western Marine Command impounds goods worth N3.5m in 2 months

The Nigeria Customs Service (WMC), Western Marine Command has recorded 396 bags of rice and 1,575 liters of petroleum products as seizures made between January and February this year.
The items have a duty paid value (DPV) of N3.5 million.
The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Zakka Audu, while conducting journalists round the seizures yesterday, said that the items were allegedly intercepted at Idiroko and Yekeme border town along badagry axis.
Audu warned those involved in smuggling activities to desist from these, even as he pledged that the command will not relent in nabbing those who try to evade Customs duty.

The WMC boss, however, lamented the deplorable state of the command, noting that the command has not been able to effectively execute its brief as a result of lack of modern boats and what he described as decaying infrastructure in the command.
He appealed to the Customs Management to hasten the provision of not only modern boats but arms and ammunition to effectively combat smugglers.
“There is decay in the command in terms of infrastructure and most of the boats we have are dilapidated. The six boats we have break down often, and, without these equipments, we will not be able to perform our function very well.
“The management has promised to help us ameliorate the problem but we hope they do it quickly as possible,” he said.
