Customs wins Maritime Cup for keeps
…Snatches victory from Ocean Star with lone goal
• ENL beats NIMASA for 3rd place
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) yesterday evening at the Astro Turf, National Stadium, Surulere Lagos, secured victory with a lone goal against Ocean Star in the final match of the 5th Maritime Cup Competition.
Mbeh Edim Oyongha, jersey number ten, scored the only goal for Customs in the fourth minute of the second half.
With this latest exploit in the annual competing organised by Ships & Ports Communication Company, the Service has earned the rights to have the trophy for keeps.
This is the third consecutive time the Customs is coming out tops in the competition.
The Service, it would be recalled, had won the cup in 2011 and 2012, the 3rd and 4th editions, respectively, of the Maritime Cup Competition.
Ocean Star a first-timer in the competition had only been subdued by the Customs which took advantage of a penalty awarded the Service to net the only goal of the match watched by a capacity crowd, which included Customs top brass and leading freight forwarders.
Earlier, yesterday at the Astro Turf, ENL Consortium had beat the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) by two unreplied goals to claim the third position in the 5th Maritime Cup Competition.
Adewale Ojora and Azeez Fela scored ENL’s goals in the second half of the match played at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
ENL was a debutant in the competition.
Awards and their winners include: Most Valuable Player award, sponsored by Sifax Group, won by Adeyinka Abiodun of Ocean Star Shipping; and Highest Goal Scorer award, sponsored by Sopetro, won by Mikail Abubakar of Nigeria Customs Service. Abubakar scored six goals in the tournament.
Others are Fair Play award, sponsored by APM Terminals Apapa, won by NIMASA; and Best Behaved Team award, sponsored by NIMASA, won by Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC).
