The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has been criticised by many Nigerians, including former Chairman of Stanbic IBTC Bank, Atedo Peterside for granting a waiver to Dangote Cement to export its products to neighbouring West African countries through the land border, despite the closure of the border.
Group Managing Director/CEO of Dangote Cement, Michel Puchercos, announced on Monday that the Federal Government had granted the company waiver to export cement through the closed land borders.
The borders were shut in August 2019 on the orders of President Buhari.
But many Nigerians, including Peterside, took to the social media to criticise the preferential treatment.
“Allowing legitimate exporters & importers to move their goods across border should be a no-brainer. Why refuse everybody else & allow only one company (Dangote)?
This is why some of us argue that the Nigerian economy is rigged in favour of a handful of well-connected persons,” the former economist and former Stannic IBTC Bank Chairman tweeted.
The Federal Government is yet not issued a statement on the development.
