The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has offered free data protection training and Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers to staff of the Nigeria Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) to boost compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.
The offer was announced during a courtesy visit by an NDPC delegation led by its National Commissioner, Vincent Olatunji, to NPERA Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Pius Akutah, to explore ways to strengthen collaboration on data protection and privacy.
Olatunji stressed the need for robust technical and organisational measures to safeguard personal information, particularly as NPERA expands its digital operations and deepens engagement with local and international stakeholders.
He said compliance with the law was vital to ensuring accountability, protecting data subjects’ rights and building public confidence.
Akutah welcomed the initiative, noting that data protection was increasingly important to NPERA’s operations, particularly as the agency works to integrate information across the maritime ecosystem into a unified database.
He reaffirmed NPERA’s commitment to improving its data protection practices and strengthening cooperation with the commission.
Both agencies also discussed further collaboration, including a proposed memorandum of understanding and the establishment of a joint working group to coordinate future activities.
Olatunji said fostering a strong data protection culture required sustained engagement, knowledge sharing and effective partnerships across sectors.
