Mr. Hassan Bello has been appointed as the substantive Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSCX), after serving in acting capacity in that position for six months.
He is the first person to be appointment substantively internally on that position in almost 20 years, as other substantive Chief Executives had always been brought from outside the NSC.
In December 2012, the Federal Government had announced Bello’s appointment as Acting Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the NSC, following the expiration of the second and final four-year term of Capt. Adamu Biu.
Until that appointment, Bello was the Council’s Director of Legal Services.
SHIPS & PORTS DAILY recalls that Bello joined the NSC in 1998 as a Deputy Director and Head, Legal Services, from the Sokoto Investment Company Limited, where he rose to the rank of Acting Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer.
The new NSC boss had previously served in the Sokoto Ministry of Justice.
A firm advocate of the need to reposition the Nigerian maritime industry for improved productivity and ranking among the world maritime nations, Bello had held various positions at local and international levels.
He is a Fellow, Nigerian Institute of Shipping (NIS); Fellow, International Dispute Resolution Institute; and Member, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
Bello was a member and spokesperson of the Nigerian delegation to the negotiation on International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea (Rotterdam Rules); member of the Ministerial Panel of Inquiry into the affairs of the Niger Dock Plc; and member of the Ministerial Committee on Cabotage Policy and Law, among others.
