The system, which kicked off March 4, 2013, it was learnt, is part of PTMLS’ efforts at boosting the integrity of the facility, in keeping with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
While he confirmed that PTML has enthroned a security access card system for Customs agents and others entering its terminal, the company General Manager, Mr. Tunde Keshiro, did not state how much it cost PTML to inaugurate the system.
“It is part of the ongoing infrastructural investment in the terminal. This will be disclosed at the appropriate time,” Keshiro said, in response via email to enquiries raised through same platform by SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
PTML, according to him, is billing N1,250 per card holder for the issuance of the document.
Although he was “unable to disclose” the number of these cards issued thus far, “viewing, fact that, access card is a control measure”, the PTML General Manager said that the scheme has attracted “positive commendations from critical stakeholders.”
On challenges before PTML in operating the card system, Keshiro stated: “False representation, identity fraud and forged documents.”
Denying that the system has been experiencing high incidences of cloning by fraudsters, he said: “Rather, PTML has been able to identify persons that had obtained through false representation and retrieved the card following confirmation by appropriate authority in the Agency.”
