A total of 128 officers out of the 2,065 officers promoted recently by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) management last week were yesterday decorated with their new ranks with a charge to justify their promotion with hard work.
Among the 118 officers serving under Zone ‘A’ of the NCS, 20 were elevated to a higher rank of Comptrollers, 54 to Deputy Comptrollers and 54 to the rank of Assistant Controllers.
Speaking during the decoration, Zonal Coordinator in charge of Zone ‘A’, Assistant Comptroller General, Victor Gbemudu charged the officers to ensure that their promotions enhanced productivity in their various commands.
He said “to whom much is given, much is expected” even as he pointed out that the promotion should be seen as a privilege and not a right.
“Promotion has come but it is not just wearing the rank. The question is what added advantage will you put to that rank? You are singled out and promoted, so you should be grateful to the Service. Promotion is not a right, it is a privileged.
“Today we have some DC’s that are Controllers, so you too can be called upon anytime to become an Area Controller. So that is an added responsibility. I urge you to go back to your various commands and I know your Controllers will give you added responsibilities,” Gbemudu stated.
While noting that the Service is not solely focused on revenue generation, Gbemudu urged the officers to always ensure the facilitation of trade in their commands.
According to him, trade facilitation is the bottom line of modern Customs.
He said revenue generation and trade facilitation should go hand in hand.
