The President, World Maritime University (WMU), Sweden, Prof. Bjorn Kjerfve, has disclosed that Nigeria will soon be accorded a special recognition by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the development of maritime industry in the country and beyond.
Kjerfve made the disclosure when he paid a visit to the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr. Patrick Apkobolokemi, during his visitation to Nigeria.
He said that Nigeria has contributed more students to the university, next to China, noting that he had held discussion with the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, to strengthen the relationship between the university and Nigeria in the area of human capacity development.
He said the vision of the university, which is 30 year old this year, is to provide and develop human capacity with its range of programmes.
Kjerfve revealed that Nigeria has been chosen as the host of the 2013 alumni conference of the university, adding that the Minister had promised to support the conference.
In his address, the NIMASA Director-General thanked the WMU President for coming to NIMASA, saying that the university belongs to the entire world and Nigeria will do everything to preserve it and make it grow.
Akpobolokemi maintained that it was encouraging the number two position of Nigeria among countries of the world that are sending students to the university, noting “NIMASA is looking forward to see the recognition of Nigeria by IMO materialise.”
