Lagos to go after owners of abandoned vessels

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos yesterday said his administration plans to engage the services of professional firms to identify owners of abandoned vessels on the state’s shoreline.

Fashola disclosed this at the 6th Lagos Climate Change Summit tagged “Exploring Business Opportunities in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.”

The governor also called for economic growth that would support protection of the ecosystem.

Fashola said that many businesses worldwide were thriving through the depletion of natural resources, noting that it contributed to the buildup of green house gases.

He said that there was the need to exploit opportunities offered by climate change.

“The world needs to urgently take the opportunities that abound in climate change in form of green economies and green collar jobs.

“Green economy is one of the options which have minimal output of green house gases into the biosphere,” he said.

Fashola also said that there was the need for public/private partnership in the utilisation of environmentally sustainable strategies to cushion the effects of climate change.

“We should work together to minimise the impact of climate change through the use of climate-smart business innovations in areas of renewable energy, technology, weather prediction, emergency responses and flood control.

“Battling the scourge of climate change will produce profits for discerning entrepreneurs and business owners,” the governor said.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, urged participants to proffer empirical solutions to climate change as it affected economy and business.
