According to the details of the burial arrangements released by the late Opesanwo’s family, a Christian wake-keep holds tomorrow from 5.00pm at his residence, 18 Adelaja Opesanwo Street, Ijegun Egbe, Satellite Town, Lagos.
The funeral service is billed for the late Opesanwo’s Satellite Town, Lagos residence, from 10.00am, followed by internment immediately after Church service at the same venue.
Reception is billed for the Nigerian Navy Sailing Club, Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos.
The late Opesanwo, aka Sammy Sparkle, passed on earlier this year at the age of 73.
Born on January 21,1940, in Ijebu-Igbo in Ogun State, the deceased lost his father at a very tender age and subsequently relocated with other members of the family to Lagos where he subsequently attended the famous CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos.
On the completion of his secondary school education, he worked briefly with the Ministry of External Affairs before joining the services of the NPA in 1955.
A man with a vision for excellence, he enrolled at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) where he trained as a Journalist and honed his skills in Public Relations practice to enhance his official duties at the NPA.
Snazzy, urbane and ebullient, the late Opesanwo’s tenure as image maker of the NPA witnessed an unprecedented era in the Authority’s corporate relations with its various publics before his retirement in 1995.
He will be remembered as one of the lead supporters of the establishment of a specialist corps of maritime journalists and in this capacity contributed immensely to the growth and development of the umbrella body of accredited journalists in the maritime sector, the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN).
He is survived by his wife, Mrs Olayinka Opesanwo, and three children, amongst whom are Mr. Adedamola Opesanwo and Barrister (Mrs.) Aramide Edwards.
