A.P. Moller – Maersk has alerted customers and industry stakeholders to a potential supply chain disruption at US Gulf and East Coast ports due to ongoing labour negotiations between the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA).

The current contract between the two parties is set to expire on September 30, raising concerns about possible port disruptions.

Although a ‘no strike’ clause is in effect until the contract’s expiration, the ILA has filed notifications with government agencies and negotiating parties regarding the possibility of a strike if no agreement is reached.

Maersk has expressed confidence in the parties’ commitment to reaching a mutually beneficial agreement, but notes that a strike remains possible without a settled contract.

In the event of disruptions, Maersk estimates that even a one-week shutdown could take 4-6 weeks to recover from, resulting in significant backlogs and delays.

To mitigate potential disruptions, Maersk said it is prepared to assist customers in exploring alternative routes, modalities, or distribution schedules to maintain their supply chains.

The Danish carrier advised its customers to stay in close contact with their Maersk representatives to communicate supply chain requirements and develop tailored contingencies if needed.
