Man arrested in Ireland for stabbing fellow crew member aboard cargo ship

A crewmember of a Liberian-flagged cargo ship has been arrested in Ireland for stabbing another crewmember during a altercation onboard the ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Captain of the MV Afric Star notified authorities in the U.K. on Thursday last week that one of his crew was seriously injured after being stabbed by another crewmember while sailing approximately 200 miles from Ireland’s coast.

An Irish Coastguard helicopter was dispatched to the scene and medevaced the injured man to a hospital in Sligo. The Captain reported that they were able to subdue the attacker onboard the vessel.

The Captain was instructed by the authorities to bring the ship to Killybegs, Ireland, where authorities later boarded the vessel and arrested the attacker.

Both men are reported to be Ukrainian nationals.

The victim remained in critical condition at a hospital in Sligo with stab wounds to the chest, according to reports.

The MV Africa Star was reportedly sailing from St. Petersburg, Russia to Panama when the incident occurred.
