The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Friday claimed their second victory in the ongoing 2025 Maritime Cup Competition, edging past five-time champions and Group B rivals, the Nigeria Customs Service, with a 1–0 win.
Defending champions Comet Shipping also tightened their grip on Group A after defeating the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) 1–0 in a tense afternoon encounter.
Both matches, played at the NPA Sports Ground in Surulere, Lagos, were fiercely contested and full of intensity.
Customs were left frustrated after two of their scoring opportunities were disallowed, one for a foul and the other for offside. Their missed chances proved costly when, in the 75th minute, NPA striker Shadrach Charles fired home the decisive goal, sending the stands into rapturous celebration.
The second fixture of the day, between NIWA and Comet Shipping, was similarly hard-fought. NIWA squandered several opportunities in front of goal, including a penalty that striker Anthony Jegede failed to convert.
Comet broke the deadlock 17 minutes into the match when Emeka Chocho, wearing jersey number 10, curled in a superb free kick that ultimately sealed the win. The champions held firm for the remainder of the match despite NIWA’s persistent pressure.
With these results, Comet sit atop Group A with six points from two matches, while NPA lead Group B, also on six points from two outings.
