Less than two weeks after it suspended a three-day industrial action over non-payment of salary arrears owed some of its members by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is threatening a fresh industrial action.
The union’s grudge this time around is against the Federal Government over the perennial Apapa traffic jam.
“No country in the world have I seen a place where the government rakes in billions of naira daily left in total ruins as it is the case in Apapa.
“We have cried out before to both the Lagos State and Federal Government to come together and fix the roads and save lives and goods that are being lost whenever a truck up-turns on the road.
“We want to say it again that if this ugly situation is allowed to continue, we will call out members on a national strike and shut down ports operations.
“We cannot continue to sit and watch our members and indeed Nigerians suffer untold hardship due to the insensitivity of the government to the situation in Apapa.
“What is happening around the ports is enough national embarrassment for the government to intervene,” blurted President-General of the union, Tony Nted.
