Mohammed Bello-Koko: Profile of the new substantive NPA Managing Director

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mohammed Bello-Koko as the Substantive Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). 

Director, Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Eric Ojiekwe stated in a press release issued on Tuesday that Bello-Koko’s appointment takes immediate effect. 

“The President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Bello-Koko as the substantive Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority. 

“This appointment takes immediate effect,” the press release stated. 

Prior to this appointment, Bello-Koko was the Executive Director, Finance and Administration of NPA and has been the acting Managing Director since the suspension of Hadiza Bala Usman for various offenses nine months ago.

Profile of Mohammed Bello-Koko 

Mohammed Bello-Koko was born on the 25th March 1969 in Koko-Besse Local Government area of Kebbi State. He attended the Federal Government Collage, Sokoto for his secondary education, which he completed in 1986. In 1992, he bagged a B.Sc degree in Management Studies from the University of Sokoto and a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 1995 from the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto. 

Bello-Koko started his banking career with FSB International Bank Plc in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in 1996 as an Executive Trainee. He rose to several positions amongst which are Banking Officer-Credit and later Senior Banking Officer, Senior Treasury Officer, Senior Banking Officer-Energy Sector (ENSEC) in charge of managing various oil and gas related multinational accounts and sub-contractors. He was Assistant Manager (Credit & Marketing) and Head, branch credit risk analyst, and later became Deputy Manager of his branch. 

He joined Zenith Bank in 2005 as a Manager and Team Head, Public Sector and Large Corporate. There again he rose to the positions of Senior Manager and Head of Public sector banking; Assistant General Manager/Zonal Head for Public Sector and Zonal head in-charge of branches under the Rivers/Bayelsa zone of the bank and then Deputy General Manager and Zonal Head, which made him a member of the bank’s executive management team, a position he held from 2013 to 2015 when he was appointed the Executive Director Finance and Administration of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). 

In May 2021, he was appointed Acting Managing Director of NPA and named the substantive Managing Director of the agency on February 15, 2022.
