The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the management of Sea Transport Manning Services Ltd, demanding the signing of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to replace the one that expired in 2023.
This was disclosed on Monday by MWUN President General, Comrade Francis Bunu, through the union’s Head of Media, Kennedy Ikemefuna.
Comrade Bunu expressed concern that for the past two years, Sea Transport Manning Services Ltd has deliberately stalled negotiations, using what he described as “negative antics” to suppress salary progression for union members and hinder their career advancement.
Despite ongoing efforts by the union to maintain industrial peace and encourage workers’ patience, Bunu noted that repeated appeals and negotiations with the company have been met with frustration and tactical delays by management.
“The union has engaged the management severally on the need to negotiate and sign a new CBA for our seafarer members, but all efforts have been deliberately frustrated,” he stated.
In response, MWUN has now set a 21-day deadline for the company to convene a meeting and resolve the long-standing issue, warning that continued inaction will not be tolerated.
