The new Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Ikot Ibas on Tuesday vowed that the Navy will frontally confront crude oil theft and other criminal activities in the maritime environment with a view to stopping crude oil theft once and for all.
Ibas made the promise while officially taking over from the immediate past Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin at Naval Headquarters, Abuja.
He said, under his leadership, the Navy will frontally confront crude oil theft and other criminal activities in the maritime environment with all the resources at their disposal.
He said, “I will at all times demand high standards of discipline, loyalty, integrity, selfless services, teamwork and professionalism from all officers, ratings and civilian staff. With our collective support, I will provide responsive and motivational leadership that will institute appropriate reward system”.
Ibas further said, “My vision is to develop a credible naval power in fulfilment of the Nigerian Navy constitutional roles towards enhancing national prosperity and security”.
Earlier in his speech, Jibrin said the Nigerian Navy in the last one year has reduced crude oil theft from the 2.4million barrels per month to about 300, 000 barrels last month.
He said the Nigerian Navy under his tenure has recorded significant milestones in the areas of Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), policing operations, research and development and training.
