‘Mystery’ importer abandons 3 laden containers at Apapa Port

Three reefer containers, with numbers MNBU3110031, MNBU3110432 and MNBU3110725 carried under Bill of Lading number 710422027 by Safmarine Container Lines and consigned to Gelda Limited, have been abandoned at the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa since September 22, 2012.
Maersk Nigeria Limited, agents to Safmarine in Nigeria, said in a statement: “Despite repeated attempts to identify a consignee and/or an interested party entitled to take delivery of the cargo, to date no one has come forward to claim the containers.
“Safmarine Container Lines’ efforts have included writing to Gelda Limited with the address provided by the Shipper, at Suite 207, 1004 Estates, Victoria Island, Lagos but our efforts have led us to the conclusion that no such company resides at the given address.

“As a substantial period has passed, we now have no choice but to take steps to mitigate the storage and plug-in costs that we continue to incur daily by disposing of the cargo so that our containers may now re-enter circulation.”
The statement further advised Gelda Limited to pick up the cargo not later than one week from the date of the statement or else risk forfeiture of the same.
