The newly elected chapter executives of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) have been taken through a two-day rigorous training on basic leadership skills.
The leadership training/retreat, which commenced on Wednesday and ended the following day, was held at the Centre for Management Development (CMD) in Ketu, Lagos.
On the first day of the programme, the participants were given an overview of the NAGAFF Constitution with reference to their roles as elected officers of the association. They were also lectured on the importance of setting goals and decision making as essential to a good administration.
For a cordial relationship with their subjects, the participants were also taught the basics of communication skills development and the wonders of motivation.
The second day of the programme got more technical as the participants were taken on the mechanisms of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and how it applies to the management of conflicts when they arise.
According to the training facilitator, Joe Okonmah, it is better to reconcile differences using the approach of ADR.
He encouraged the participants to inculcate the approach of ADR in their profession as freight forwarding agents and as leaders.
The day-two session turned out to be an interactive one with the discussion on ‘Code of Conduct’.
The topic facilitator, Yomi Adeniyi, said that applying the code of conduct of their profession as freight forwarders will enable the participants “inform the day-to-day decision and provide visible guide for behavior that reflects the covenant the organization has made to uphold its most important values.”
He advised the participants to embrace their association’s code of conduct as it serves as an instrument necessary for the efficient administration of the association.
But one of the participants, Reverend Emma Agubanze, who is the Chairman KLT Chapter, though acknowledging the importance of every organization having the instrument however complained that there were anomalies with the Code of Conduct provided by the association.
Agubanze’s position was agreed with by facilitator Okonmah who said that it was necessary that NAGAFF’s Code of Conduct was reviewed.
Okonmah lamented indiscipline and absence of camaraderie among members of the association which according to him defiles the dictates of NAGAFF’s Code of Conduct.
The participants were, afterwards, taken on the topics of Parliamentary Procedures, Power of Delegation and Personality Brand Development.
The training/retreat concluded with the presentation of Certificates of Returns to the NAGAFF chapter executives at the venue of the programme by the Chairman Board of Trustee of NAGAFF, Chidiebere Enelama.
