Navy begins deployment of troops in Lake Chad Basin

The Nigerian Navy has started deployment of troops in the Lake Chad Basin Nava post.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, made the comment while inaugurating the Chief of Naval Staff Directive 2 at the Naval headquarters, Abuja on Monday.

The naval outpost in the Lake Chad Basin is to be used as base to intensify the counter insurgency operation and to prevent terrorists’ infiltration into the country.

He said the advance party meant to protect the nation’s territorial integrity in the Lake Chad were moved to the base in September, 2016.

According to him, the advance team of officers and ratings deployed in the Forward Operations Base were to prepare modalities for the deployment of a larger force and equipment required for the operation in the area.

According to him, the deployment of the naval personnel in the Lake Chad Basin was designed to enhance counter terrorism operations and protection of the nation’s maritime domain.

Ibas said the 2016 CNS Strategic Document was designed “to sustain efficient and effective operational presence at sea to create a secure maritime environment for national prosperity.”

He added that the strategic document also focused on enhanced personnel development and planned maintenance system for better operational readiness.
