The Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT) said the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has granted it accreditation for more maritime and business related courses.
The Provost of the institution, Dr. Suleiman Abiodun, disclosed this exclusively to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY on Monday.
According to him, the institution was also accredited to train students on fishing technology, marine engineering and others.
He said, “We have been given accreditation to start maritime transport and business studies. We also train students in the area of marine engineering so also were we given the mandate for fishery technology, artisan, agriculture and post harvest technology.
“At the nautical sciences, we have the mandate to train people on fish keeping and conventional transport. In fact the mandate we have can be compared to the Marine College in Kenya because college of Fisheries is the only college in the country where we train not only Marine Captains but also fishermen.
He also stated that aside the accreditation, the institution will also train students on horticulture.
“We have a wider mandate. In addition to the mandate the NBTE gave to us recently, which was maritime transport and business studies we also train people in the area of horticulture. We have just gotten the accreditation with what we call industrial relation and legal studies we were just given the accreditation,” he stated.
According to the FCFMT Provost, the institution has enjoyed a lot of support from the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
“We are under Ministry of Agriculture and they have been a good source of support to the institution and that is where our funding comes from.
“The Ministry of Agricultural is doing its best to support the school, In fact we just acquired simulators. We have radar Appar simulator, and GMDSS simulator. Our institution is more funded but I believe government can do more,” Abiodun added.
