New Customs camouflage will aid anti-smuggling operation, says Gbemudu

Zonal Coordinator in charge of Zone A, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Assistant Comptroller General Victor Gbemudu has said that the new camouflage uniform of the Service will enhance its operation especially in the fight against smuggling activities.

Speaking yesterday at the zonal headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, Gbemudu said the launch of the camouflage uniform at the zone which covers states in the South West region is to create public awareness and to differentiate genuine officers from impostors.

“This is just like a follow up of the launching exercise in Abuja. Any developments we come up with are geared towards combating smuggling and also to facilitate trade. This uniform will up our ante in smuggling operation and we want the general populace and also the media to be aware that we have another shade of uniform so that when they see people in this kind of uniform you don’t say they are fake officers,” he said.

The Customs boss added that the camouflage uniform will boost the morale of officers and make them combat ready to face smugglers.

Kitted in the new uniform, all the Area Controllers in the zone agreed that the uniform will make them look smarter and also gear them up for greater performance.

Speaking with SHIPS & PORTS DAILY, Customs Area Controller of Apapa command, Comptroller Charles Edike said that  the uniform will reenergize officers and will also send a message to smugglers that the Service is battle ready.

“With this new uniform our officers’ morale is being boosted. Smugglers and those who are anti-government policies that has to do with customs will now begin to take note that we are not playing but damn serious because we have been reinvigorated and ready to make Nigeria proud,” he said.

Area Controller, Seme Command, Comptroller Willy Egbudin said, “This uniform has given us a combatant appearance because when you are on this, you will give that kind of fright to smugglers to let them know that you are already in a combatant form to stop them from their nefarious activities.”
