The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mallam Habib Abdullahi has said that Nigerian ports are now effective and efficient in cargo handling with improved ports operations which has enhanced the contributions of maritime sector to the nation’s economy.
Abdullahi who was represented by Engr. David Omonibeke, the Executive Director Marine and Operations stated this last Monday while receiving a delegation of the United Parcel Service (UPS) who paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Lagos.
He said that the Federal Government had approved the establishment of deep and dry seaports in parts of the country in order to increase the facilities provided by the organisation.
He further said that the Federal Government had set up a rail system to ease the movement of cargo from the ports to select destinations across the country while the NPA management was collaborating with Lagos State Government and stakeholders to make the access road motorable.
According to a press release issued by NPA’s General Manager Public Affairs, Capt. Iheanacho Ebubeogu, “The Managing Director said there are only seven agencies that are approved by the Federal Government to carry out examination of goods while others may be invited by the Nigeria Customs Service if the need arise.
“He also commended the terminal operators for the acquisition of state of the art equipment that has eased ports operations in Nigeria”.
The leader of the UPS delegation, Michael Druss reportedly commended NPA for the development and transformation that have taken place in the various port terminals across the nation.
Druss said the courtesy visit was to partner with NPA and create a harmonious working relationship.
