Nigerian Shippers’ Council donates vehicle to group

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has donated a pick up van to the Federal Roads Committee on Surveillance Action Against Road Abuse (FERCSARA) to aid their operations in decongesting Lagos roads.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Council, Hassan Bello, Deputy Director, Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement, Cajetah Agu said that the vehicle was donated to FERCSARA as part of NSC’s corporate social responsibility.

Agu, while handing over the keys and documents of the vehicle to the Chairman of the group Chief Austin Kelly, said that the NSC was responding to the request from the group for an operational vehicle to facilitate its activities.

He enjoined the group to make judicious use of the vehicle by restoring sanity on port access roads in the country.

FERCSARA Chairman, Austine Kelly expressed the appreciation of his group to NSC for the donation.

He said FERCSARA will continue to support NSC’s aspiration of tackling the Apapa gridlock.

Meanwhile, a report by a Federal/Lagos State Governments Technical Committee has mapped out strategies to put an end to the intractable crises of traffic congestion, security threat and infrastructure collapse in Apapa.

The committee, which was co-chaired by former Minister for Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the present Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Tunji Bello, in its report, put the cost of restoring order to Apapa at N11.60 billion.

But the report sent to the National Economic Council in September 2012 did not include the cost of dualising Wharf, Creek and Tin Can roads, which was one of the 13 regeneration projects identified for redevelopment.

The report said the Federal Ministry of Works was to provide the Council details about the cost and design of Wharf, Creek and Tin Can roads, which formed the most strategic project in the Apapa regeneration plan.
