The Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside, has inaugurated an implementation monitoring committee to drive the reform of the Nigerian ship registry with Emmanuel Ilori appointed as its Chairman.
Dakuku had penultimate week, while receiving the report of the committee on the review of the nation’s ship registry, promised not to allow the report gather dust on the shelf but to implement the recommendations of the committee with dispatch.
Speaking while inaugurating the implementation committee at the agency’s headquarters in Lagos on Tuesday, Dakuku said the review committee had made far-reaching recommendations, which cannot be swept under the carpet but to ensure its full implementation.
He promised to support the committee in implementing the recommendations even as he charged them to work hard to change the narrative of the nation’s ship registry.
Represented by the Executive Director, Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Gambo Ahmed, Dakuku gave the terms of reference of the implemetation committee to include “review of the recommendations of the committee and extract immediately, actionable items on short, medium and long term basis for the Executive management consideration and approval and to undertake any other task relating to the implementation of the Committee’s report as may be directed by the Executive management,”
In his remarks, Ilori assured that the implementation committee will deliver on its mandate.
“We have been charged now to implement the report and find ways we can get results, we will do it. That commitment I can give on behalf of the members that the industry deserve from us nothing better and we will try our very best to make sure that we get result for the sake of the nation. The maritime industry is critical to the development of our economy and creation of jobs. Therefore, the job we have been asked to do, we are not going to take it lightly,” he said.
