Waterways accidents worry NIWA

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) on Monday said it would enforce a 2014 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed its powers to control the right of way along the shoreline in coastal areas of the country.

He said NIWA would no longer tolerate the usurpation of its powers by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).

NIWA Managing Director, George Moghalu, said the agency is vested with the exclusive right to regulate waterways and shorelines in Nigeria.

“We at NIWA hereby reassure our clients and stakeholders of the protection of their investment and workforce. We shall within the laws and constitutional provisions, ensure that we keep trespassers out of our right of way and may where necessary deploy the federal might to bring the oppositions to adhere to do right things. Also, we shall put a stop further intimidation of federal government licensed stakeholders,” he said.
