No fewer than 100 of the 300 Seafarers and ratings employed on contract by Gulf Manning Services Nigeria Limited: a subsidiary of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in 2005, have been forced to resign following the condition of management of the latter that only contract staff who resign and reapply would be entitled to retirement benefits.
The contract staff are already spoiling for a showdown with the management because they were “not given conditions that can make them eligible to collect retirement benefits even though they have served for upwards of nine years” while other categories of staff employed by the company were allegedly paid their entitlement while the contract staff were simply asked to resign and reapply for jobs before they can be entitled to retirement benefits in the near future.
Some of the contract staff said they are aggrieved because the number of days spent since 2005 would not be put into consideration.
SHIPS & PORTS DAILY also gathered that the contract staff who were asked to resign and reapply have been making payments into the contributory pension fund and union dues.
The spokesman of the company could not be reached for comments.
