Determined to combat the menace of Human Immuno Virus (HIV)/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among ports users, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Organisation (ALCO) are continuing their collaborative efforts to sensitise ports users on the dangers of the scourge and how to fight it.
The most recent workshop held in Lagos saw the training of peer educators, which comprised of truck operators and other artisans operating within the ports community, on how to educate other ports users on the principles of “Abstinence, Being faithful, and the use of Condom (ABC)”, as ways of fighting the virus, as well as how to give voluntary counseling to the virus’ victims.
The participants, who were drawn from the various terminals at both the Tin-Can Island Port Complewx (TCIPC) and Lagos Port Complex (LPC), were trained on how to network within their terminals and to train others to become educators.
Chairman, NPA HIV/AIDS Enlightenment and Sensitisation Standing Committee, Dr. Comfort Datong, said that the NPA Management, through the campaign initiative, is making appreciable effort to ensure the well-being of truck operators and other ports users.
