NPA inaugurates public procurement committee, to immunise staff against meningitis

The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Mallam Habib Abdullahi has called for synergy among the departments of the authority in projects implementation so it could derive values for its expenditure.

Abdullahi gave this charge in Lagos yesterday while inaugurating a five-member procurement planning committee in accordance with Part 4, section 21 of the Public Procurement Act.

He said NPA was aware of the provisions of the Procurement Act and as a law abiding organisation, it would not flout any of its provisions.

He enjoined the committee to schedule meetings with various divisions or departments with a view to ensuring complaince with the law.

Secretary of the committee and General Manager, Procurement, Engineer Adams Jatto said the inauguration has become necessary in order to enable the committee function in accordance with law.

The Managing Director is the chairman of the committee, while other members are the General Managers Finance, Legal/Board Matters, Procurement and Corporate and Strategic Planning.

In a separate development, NPA has expressed commitment to the wellbeing of its workers.

Abdullahi stated this yesterday while speaking at the flag off ceremony of vaccination of all NPA employees against meningitis in Lagos., where he was represented by the General Manager, Marine and Operations, Abdullahi  Goje.

NPA’s General Manager, Medical Services Dr Chinwe Abama, said the division embarked on the immunisation exercise in response to a call by World Health Organisation (WHO) to prevent the spread of meningitis in some West African countries including Nigeria, which is regarded as meningitis belts.

Abama disclosed that meningitis is a serious infection of the meninges, the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, and that GSK Pharmaceuticals is involved in the programme because it is the manufacturer of meningitis drugs.

She listed the benefits of the exercise to include supporting employees’ wellbeing, reduction in absenteeism as a result of referrals, cost control, reduction of injuries and improving productivity.
