In a move to prevent a national economic shutdown, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, intervened to stop a planned strike by the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) and other truck unions on Monday.
At a meeting with truckers, represented by Executive Director Marine & Operations, Engr. Olalekan Badmus, Dantsoho appealed to the truckers, saying, “We will work with the Lagos State Government and police high command to address your concerns and prevent any shutdown. The national economy cannot afford it.”
The meeting resulted in a signed communique addressing truckers’ grievances and suspending the planned strike. Attendees included industry leaders such as the Special Adviser on Transportation to the Lagos State Governor, Sola Giwa; Lagos Commissioner of Police; AMATO National President, Chief Remi Ogungbemi; and representatives from LASTMA, LASTOC, NURTW, and RTEAN.
The truck unions had threatened to stop services to the maritime industry due to widespread extortion and attacks on truckers by hoodlums and miscreants.
