NPA remains committed to safety of lives, properties in Nigerian ports, says MD

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mallam Habib Abdullahi, has affirmed that the Authority remains committed to safety of lives and properties within the nation’s seaports.
Consequently, according to Abdullahi, the NPA Management will continue to give maximum attention to the provision of fire equipment, sensitisation of the ports community on safety and fire prevention, training and retraining of the NPA Fire Service personnel in accordance with national legislation, international standards and best practices.
The NPA boss barred his mind yesterday while speaking at the passing-out-parade for Squad 48 recruit fire personnel of the Authority who recently undertook a six-month training at the NPA Fire Service Central Training School in Tin-Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC), Apapa, Lagos.
Represented by the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, NPA, Engr. David Omonibeke, the NPA Managing Director disclosed that the training school will soon be renovated and expanded so that it can accommodate larger number of students from within and outside the Authority.

Apparently impressed by the knowledge and skills exhibited during their practical demonstration before guests on the occasion, Abdullahi commended the initiative of the Health, Safety and Environment Department and all those who are connected in one way or another with the training of the recruits.
Earlier in a welcome address, the NPA Chief Fire Officer, Mr. W.S Olayiwola, revealed that the recruits have undergone a mandatory six months intensive training in basic fire fighting, prevention, control and rescue, as well as squad drilling, which, he noted, was the hallmark of any para-military organisation.
Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of awards to the Managing Director and the Executive Director, Marine and Operations for their support, as well as some recruits for their outstanding performance.
Top official of the NPA at the occasion included the General Manager, Western Ports, Miss Adenike Sonaike; General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, Engr. Tolu Talabi; General Manager, Physical Planning and Development, Arc. Sule Musa Dan Hassan; and General Manager, Public Affairs, Capt. Iheanacho Ebubeogu, among others.
